AI vs. REAL ART - Will it be the replacement for hand-made originals?
How will real art fair in the fight with ai?
I'm an artist so you can probably figure where I'm at in this new AI world of mass-produced "art."
But the thing is that I don't care if you like an image of a little cottage with wildflowers surrounding it in a mystical valley that has been re-imagined in 45 different ways within two minutes with the click of a mouse. If that's your choice, then so be it.
However, AI, for all its benefits, produces flat, boring art. It looks re-produced. It looks generic. It's often too bright or just a little off in some way. Most people will never walk up to it and marvel at its beauty.
Whether it's the little cottage, or a large abstraction, or an ocean seascape, the tell-tale signs that a computer created it exist. OK for some; retch for others. It doesn't matter the type of art you're drawn to, it matters how it was made.
Yes, there are factories churning out art and selling it online. Prints overwhelm the artspace, but if taken from an original, the concept seems harmless. More people can enjoy your creations.
But, when a computer creates the image, swiped from numerous other images and re-compiled into a new "original" image, well that just sounds like theft.
Theft from all of those artists who created the works that the little bits of swiped imagery reproduced. And yes, it's a swipe from all the artworks we artists, in an attempt to get our art out into the world, have given over to this new technology.
So, there's that.
But when you step back you realize that AI isn't creating textured, multi-layered art...yet. It doesn't have the stroke work, they impasto. It isn't laboring over the color choices and the tiny imperfections.
These creations, created by us, the artisans, are what true art lovers value.
Will AI replace the desirable impasto of layered paint?
Yes, you can get something to hang on your wall that goes with your sofa. There have always been the home stores with arty selections for you. Go forth and choose your cottage surrounded by wildflowers; there will likely be many. I'm not trying to be snarky. A little cottage surrounded by flowers sounds lovely...when produced with care and inspiration.
But for you, you know who you are, the value lies in not only the image of the art, but the texture, the feel of real canvas, the faint scent of oils and the appreciation of those hands that created it.
As the world jumps forward with AI slop (yes, I said it), we artists roll their eyes and wonder if our value is less or will be in the near future.
I'm sure the modernists received the same eye roll as they took over.
I know the impressionists suffered a similar disdain in their time.
As we move forward, do you think the AI art, and it will progress, will be a reasonable replacement for art overall?
Will it replace the texture and layers of paint real artists lay down? Will it somehow 3D print this work in an attempt at originality?
Sure, likely, probably.
But then, the value of the real works will be invaluable.
